Ever wondered what the best-selling car in the UK is? Well, the Society of Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has all the answers and below we’ve got the latest information of the top 10 cars that have registered the most units in the UK for 2020 to date.
The SMMT has just revealed the top 10 best selling cars for August 2020 and the Ford Fiesta has retaken top spot. Ford’s ever-popular hatchback managed 3,372 sales, a downturn from the 5,455 sales it made in July, but still enough to maintain its top spot for the year so far.
Coming in at second for August is the Volkswagen Golf. The Golf’s total of 2,570 for the month is a huge leap on its previou form and signals a return to form for the wider new car market as car dealers once again open up dealerships.
The Ford Focus is never far from the top of the top of the best sellers list and it sat third for August with 2,391 units sold, helping it retain second spot for the year so far.
Total new car sales were down 5.8 per cent from August last year after a successful July where sales actually increased up 11.3 per cent compared to July 2019. Petrol cars were down 14.7 per cent and diesel cars down 39.5 per cent. Plug-in hybrid cars were up 221.1 per cent in August and electrified vehicles as a whole were up 77.6 per cent.

Top ten best-selling cars 2020
1. Ford Fiesta – 29,891 registrations
The Ford Fiesta dropped outside the top ten in April with just 55 units and had a poor May with just 760 sales, but Britain’s best-selling car is returning to form as dealers begin to reopen as it made 3,372 sales taking it to first place for August.
2. Ford Focus – 25,517 registrations
The Ford Focus jumped up a spot to second in June 2020 and stays there for August. 2,570 registrations in August was less than its class rival, the Volkswagen Golf but the Focus retains second spot for the year so far.
3. Vauxhall Corsa – 25,182 registrations
The Vauxhall Corsa was the UK’s fourth best-selling car in 2019 and it’s doing one better so far in 2020. A first place in June and July has helped solidify is position for the year with 5,455 sold in July. The Corsa dropped to fifth for August with just 2,081 sales. A new electric e-Corsa will help bump up numbers as EVs continue to grow in popularity.
4. Volkswagen Golf – 19,370 registrations
2019’s second best-selling car is recovering from poor lockdown sales. The Golf had a disappointing sixth place finish for June 2020 and a fourth place in July, but placed second for August with 2,570. The Volkswagen Golf remains behind the Ford Focus for the year so far in fourth position.
5. Mercedes-Benz A-Class – 19,370 registrations
Prior to lockdown, the A-Class sold well thanks to its premium image and competitive finance deals from Mercedes. The A-Class came fifth last year with 53,724 registrations and sits in fifth place so far this year. Mercedes sold 1,722 A-Class’ in August – the sixth best-selling car for August, helping the hatch jump to fifth spot overall.
6. Nissan Qashqai – 18,736 registrations
The Qashqai had a strong start to 2020 with 4,608 registrations in January but lockdown followed the general form for the industry – only 49 Qashqai’s were sold in April. The Qashqai returned to form in July with 2,971 units sold, but fell out of the top 10 for August meaning it dropped one place to sixth for the year.
7. MINI – 16,528 registrations
The MINI has had a strong 2020, but it too succumbed to the issues of lockdown – only 22 MINI Coopers were sold in April and it dropped out of the top ten for May. June saw the MINI perform much better with 3,400 units sold it came fifth for the month. July saw a drop with only 2,906 registrations and it fell out of the top 10 for August. A new all-electric model should help expand the car’s popularity with emission-conscious buyers.
8. Volkswagen Polo – 14,512 registrations
The sixth-generation Volkswagen Polo clinched ninth spot in 2019 with 37,453 registrations. Due to lockdown it only managed 7 registrations for April and remained outside the top ten for May. The German supermini performed better in July with 2,932 registrations, but only managed 1,466 sales in August.
9. Volkswagen Tiguan – 14,467 registrations
The Volkswagen Tiguan emerged into the top ten for the year in July with 2,880 cars sold for the month. August saw another strong showing with 1,645 sales – more than any other SUV for the month. The Tiguan is currently the second best-selling SUV for 2020 after the Qashqai.
10. Toyota Yaris – 13,546 registrations
The Toyota Yaris had a healthy third place for June with 4,200 Yaris’ sold in the month. July and August were less kind to the Japanese supermini as its dropped out of the top ten best sellers, but it remains in tenth spot for the year. The release of new model this year should help the Yaris surge further up the best-sellers list.
