Genesis teases new GV70 SUV during testing programme

Genesis, the Hyundai Group’s premium spin-off brand, has teased the new GV70 mid-size SUV. It’ll eventually slot into the company’s line-up beneath the GV80, providing fresh competition for the likes of the BMW X3, Mercedes GLC and Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Like the new G70 saloon, the Genesis GV70 should be based on existing Hyundai Group architecture. It’ll most likely share the same underpinnings as the recently launched fourth- generation Hyundai Tucson, which will furnish the SUV with a range of electrified powertrains, including a trio of mild-hybrids, a closed hybrid and a PHEV.

Genesis’s teaser images certainly indicate a similarity between the two cars. The GV70’s bodywork is sleeker than the Tucson’s – and it appears to forgo the black plastic cladding used by its sister vehicle – but it looks roughly the same size. Also, certain hard-to-modify mountings, such as the A-pillar and roofline, are indistinguishable between the two.

The GV70’s styling looks set to follow Genesis’s current design language. It shares the same triangular radiator grille and slimline LED headlights as the GV80 – a design choice which is echoed at the rear with a set of similarly styled LED tail lights.

Inside, we expect the new Tucson’s infotainment setup will be carried onto the GV70 also, albeit surrounded by unique cowlings and coded with dedicated graphics. So, buyers should get a pair of 10.25-inch screens – one for the gauge cluster and one for the infotainment screen – along with a set of new capacitive heater controls for the centre console.

This Genesis GV70 mule also carries a QR code on its bonnet and doors which, when scanned, will link passers-by to a webpage that discusses the car’s camouflage wrap. It seems Genesis is pushing its premium branding hard, as the firm says the pattern is inspired by the “diffused reflection of light from precision-cut diamonds.”

Genesis calls the pattern “G-Matrix” – and the firm says that the production-ready GV70 will feature the design in some “creative” manner. Genesis is yet to confirm where the hatching will be used, but likely locations include interior trim and seat upholstery.
